Haiku is Japanese poetry. It was refined in the 1600s. Haiku is composed of three lines of verse that do not rhyme. The challenge is each line is limited to a particular number of syllables.

 

Line 1: 5 syllables

Line 2: 7 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

 

Your assignment is to write a haiku about anything having to do with the autumn season. It can be about falling leaves, fall sports and Homecoming, Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving dinner . . . the list is endless!

 

Finish your haiku by 5 p.m. Wednesday. We'll share the best in class Thursday.

Many rap artists use alliteration and assonance in their lyrics. Eminem, for example, uses assonance in his songs such as in his classic, "Without Me":

 

When I get shocked

at the hospital

by the doctor

when I'm not cooperating

when I'm rocking the table

while he's operating

 

The repetitive vowel sound is /aw/. Note that not all of the o's carry this sound so they are not included.

 

Create lyrics of your own that contain alliteration, assonance, and just for fun, at least one example of onomatopoeia. Unlike rap artists, however, your topic and vocabulary must be school-appropriate.

 

Your song must contain at least six lines.
